Visiting the Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia
As part of the CDT cohort-building activities, we recently travelled to Ljubljana, Slovenia to visit the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI).
The institute conducts research in large range of scientific fields, and our visit there was a great opportunity for us to engage with experienced reactor physicists. Our hosts were very knowledgeable and led us through a number of exciting experiments using the TRIGA research reactor at the institute.
Getting to look down into a nuclear reactor for the first time was a great experience, especially seeing the blue Cherenkov radiation. Seeing the theories we had learnt about being put into practice was an invaluable experience, and operating parts of the reactor ourselves during the experiments was an experience we won’t forget for a while.
As well as the educational aspect, this trip was an opportunity for us to travel together and bond as a cohort. This was definitely the highlight of our first year and we all look forward to making more memories together over the next few years.
