US visit to Idaho and Oak Ridge
Between 9-16 September 2024, Cohort 3 from the Nuclear Energy Futures CDT visited Idaho National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, along with Director Mark Wenman and Manager Jon Tate.
The group of 19 visited both labs over two action-packed days which included a balance of talks and tours. Highlights included the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) that tests nuclear fuels and reactor materials; the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) which has the strongest reactor-based neutron source in the US and is used to study materials, physics and chemistry; and FRONTIER, the world’s fastest supercomputer with 1.1 exaflops of performance (and an absurdly large cooling system that is pumped from a separate building).
We would like to thank our collaborators for putting on such an amazing event for our researchers. We are pleased to report that all students survived the 07:30am starts.
