    The Department of Engineering

The Department of Engineering aims to create world-leading engineering knowledge that benefits society. It does this by sharing its knowledge through publication, teaching, and collaboration in order to foster sustainability, prosperity, and resilience. By integrating engineering disciplines into one department, it can address major challenges and develop complete solutions serving as an international hub for engineering excellence.

Since its foundation in 1875, the Department of Engineering has grown to become the largest department in the University, with over 130 faculty members, 200 contract research staff and research fellows, nearly 600 research students, and over 1000 undergraduates. It’s also now the largest integrated engineering department in the UK.

The engineering department at Cambridge is a world leader in research and teaching. In 2009, the university was ranked first in the broad field of engineering/technology and computer sciences by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranking, and first in the field of technology by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES). It also came ahead of any other institution in General Engineering in the national Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
